The Swedish brand Volvo has been one of the pioneers of automotive safety. Out of the brand’s diverse portfolio, however, one of its most iconic body types is the station wagon. The brand has such an offering in the midsize luxury segment. However, if you have noticed, SUVs are all the rage now and if you’re looking at one that combines the strength of an SUV and the station wagon, the new Volvo V60 Cross Country is just the car for you.

Overall Rating

It is introduced as a brand-new car for the 2021 model year and prices for the V60 Cross Country start at an MSRP of $45,100. It is an offshoot of the Volvo V60 line-up and that car is reviewed separately. It sees plenty of competition in the form of Audi A4 Allroad, Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon, and Subaru Outback 3.6R. Let’s see how the car performs in regards to the segment in this in-depth review.

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon Features

8.0/10

Since the Volvo V60 Cross Country is a singular trim level of the broader line-up of the Volvo V60, it is not further divided into trim levels. It comes in a single well-equipped trim that retails for $45,100. All-wheel-drive comes as standard on this car to provide it with its necessary off-road ability. It comes with a 2 L four-cylinder engine that produces 250 hp. Standard features include LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, hands-free power tailgate, virtual instrument panel, leather upholstery, 9-inch infotainment system, and power-adjustable front seats. One can see that it is a very well-equipped trim level and is very much worth the price it retails at.

Which trim should you buy?

When deciding which trim to buy, it is quite easy to name one because the Cross Country is not subdivided into any other trim level. We would’ve liked to have a more powerful engine in order to fully support the sporting credentials of this wagon. Like we have mentioned before, it is a very well-loaded trim but in terms of options, Volvo offers you a lot as well including the Advanced Package, Cross Country Pro Package, Luxury Package and so on that make it all the more special. We recommend that you pick the Advanced package.

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon Engine and Performance

7.0/10

When it comes to the performance of the Volvo V60 Cross Country, one finds that it misses out on the most powerful engines that the brand has to offer. There is only one engine and that is a 2 L turbocharged four-cylinder. The car is all-wheel-drive by default and there are no other powertrain options available. It produces a power output of 250 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. We’re glad that it does not come with the front-wheel-drive powertrain because that would compromise the capabilities of this car.

The transmission is an eight-speed automatic that does its job very well. Its acceleration is decent and very much enough for the use case that most owners have been subject to. This results in a 0 to 60 mph time of 6.8 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 16.1 seconds. The performance is definitely understated but feels capable due to how well the chassis and suspension of this car are engineered. It is a strong performer in every aspect and looks extremely good while doing so.

One can see that among the competitors, the bar for performance is nearly equal for most rivals except Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz is also a much more expensive car and hence is not directly comparable. It is a significantly better-performing car in every single aspect. The Volvo is not anything close to the fastest on paper or in real life while the Audi offers good performance for the price. The Subaru is the least expensive car but does not perform as eagerly even with its larger engine.

How well does the 2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country handle?

When it comes to handling, the Volvo is definitely very decent. Although one has to equip the sport suspension to have extremely fine-tuned handling, the Cross Country versions are better equipped without it. We understand that this kind of setup makes it very easy to adapt to both roads and rough terrain. Its ride is never punishing even when the terrain is. However, we have to say that it is on the firmer side.

However, it has decently good handling and this chassis is very capable. The NVH levels inside the cabin are very low and make you feel completely plush. The all-wheel drive also makes for an excellent combination along with the powertrain to make it shoot out of corners. The steering is also quite decent and we are very impressed with its response. Overall, it is a nice car that has managed to strike excellent compromises in terms of all aspects of handling.

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country Braking Performance

There is one big advantage that Volvo has over its competitors and that lies in its braking setup. Being a brand that has focused so much on safety, one of the biggest priorities in terms of performance has been to reduce braking distances. It has very confident brakes and makes the car come to a halt from 60 mph in 112 feet which is excellent. It also has 14-inch rotors up front and 13.6-inch rotors in the rear which is pretty much the largest in the class. The results speak for themselves and can be examined below.

As we have observed before, the Volvo manages to come out on top with quite a margin. It has a very impressive braking performance, coming to a stop from 60 mph in just 112 feet. The other cars are not exactly great in this department. The Subaru has slightly worse braking performance but the Mercedes-Benz and Audi fall back by the heavy amount in this area. The Mercedes is also the heaviest car in this category. It is impressive how Volvo has managed to control its weight and a lot of the credit goes to the suspension setup.

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon Fuel Economy

5.0/10

Another big advantage of the 2 L turbocharged engine from Volvo is that it has had a history of returning excellent fuel efficiency. The case of the V60 is similar as it offers 22 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined. These are excellent figures considering that the car is producing 250 hp and is good enough for a range of 522 miles on the highway. This is impressive, despite the fuel tank being small at just 14.5 gallons. It does not, however, in any way hamper the range.

Although the Subaru has very decent fuel efficiency and is at times better than the competition, the Volvo is very close. We are thoroughly impressed with the Subaru because it has a much bigger engine 3.6 L and also the longest range due to a big fuel tank. The Mercedes Benz has the lowest fuel efficiency figures and has a lot of slack to pick up. However, it is quite forgivable considering it is a much better-performing car. Audi manages to strike a good balance in this department.

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon Interior

When it comes to the interior, Swedish elegance is just something else. One can see that the material quality is extremely good and the fit and finish are just excellent. There is also a large amount of space on the inside which makes it a really nice place to be in. Ingress and egress are also very easy and the seats and door openings are designed to be very effectively usable in the cities. The driving position is also nice and makes one feel in control. The cabin is very much similar to the one that you would find in the Volvo S60 as well as the Volvo XC60 SUV.

The design is minimalistic and quite upscale. Another advantage is that it offers a very decent cargo capacity. Cargo capacity is quite generous even without folding down the rear seats at 23.2 ft.³. The seats are particularly well-built and support you very well. There is comfortable seating for five adults and we would feel that the interiors are one of the strongest parts of this car.

The cabin of all cars in this category are quite spacious but the Volvo, Mercedes, and Audi offer better quality cabins. None of the cars ever feel cramped in any row. The Mercedes has much better cargo capacity than any car in this class while the Volvo, which has the lowest cargo capacity in the segment still has a lot. One feels gently very impressed about the interiors and the space offered inside these cars. Some standard features include:

  • Automatic climate control
  • 3-inch Digital Driver Display
  • Panoramic Moonroof
  • Proximity keyless entry
  • Push-button start
  • Cruise control
  • Power liftgate

What’s there to keep you entertained?

When it comes to infotainment options, the car has been dealt a very fair hand. The standard infotainment screen is a 9-inch touchscreen while the sound system is a 10 speaker stereo. There are upgrades available as well. It also offers the latest smartphone connectivity packages including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also SiriusXM satellite radio. Some of the controls of the car are hidden inside the infotainment system due to the sake of simplicity. It takes a bit of time to start up but the system is intuitive once it gets running. Some features of the infotainment system include:

  • 9-inch Sensus Touchscreen
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • HD Radio
  • Two additional USB ports
  • 14 or 15-speaker stereo
  • Wireless device charging

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon Exterior

The Volvo V60 Cross Country is a stunning piece of design. Volvo has perfected modern minimalistic car design and that this is definitely evident in their new crop of cars. It certainly looks more upmarket compared to the other models in its category. It also manages to blend its higher ground clearance and larger wheel arches beautifully into its wagon body. Volvo also offers excellent exterior colors and the detailing using the lights is also brilliant. It is definitely something that will attract buyers solely due to its looks but it is a car that has much more to offer than this looks.

The Mercedes is the largest car in the segment and shows that advantage in terms of cargo space as well as interior space. The Audi A4 on the other hand is nearly the smallest and has very modest dimensions. In terms of design, we feel that it is Volvo that has the most matured design language. The Volvo also has excellent ground clearance which is very much comparable to the Subaru. It is also quite heavy, being just 140 pounds shy of the Mercedes. Some standout features include:

  • Full-LED Active High-Beam Illumination
  • Full LED headlamps and taillamps
  • LED fog lamps
  • Panoramic Moonroof
  • Power Liftgate
  • Auto rain-sensing wipers and headlamps
  • Dynamic Brake Assist
  • Traction Control
  • Hill Descent Control
  • 18-inch 5-spoke Diamond Cut Alloy Wheels

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon Safety

When it comes to safety, there is no brand that strikes a chord like Volvo does. The V60 gets a five star safety rating from NHTSA but has not been evaluated by the IIHS yet. It comes with most of the advanced safety features available in the market today as standard features. It comes with the latest safety pick including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with lane keeping assist and so on as standard features. One can also equip it with semi-autonomous driving modes. Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Dynamic AWD transmission
  • Active Power monitoring on the wheels
  • Run Off-Road Mitigation System
  • Volvo City Safe System
  • Dynamic Stability Control
  • Hill Descent Control
  • Traction Control
  • Anti-Lock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution
  • Lane Assist
  • Road Sign Information
  • LATCH system
  • 3-point Seat Belts

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon Competition

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country RS Vs. 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon

As we have observed, the Mercedes-Benz is above Volvo in terms of nearly every single aspect of performance metric. In terms of brakes however, the Volvo definitely has an edge. The Volvo also returns better fuel efficiency. If you look at the interiors, both cars have excellent fit and finish and material quality. The Mercedes comes at a slight premium and hence we would pick the Volvo.

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country vs. 2020 Audi A4 Allroad

The Audi A4 Allroad has excellent performance and good looks but fails to impress in certain areas. Its off-road credentials are not exactly great and the Volvo makes for a better pick in these aspects. The interior space offered in the Audi is also pretty nice and it also offers a similarly large list of features. It is also offered at a very similar price. It is also quite fuel-efficient.

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country Vs. 2020 Subaru Outback 3.6R

The Subaru Outback is also one of the biggest proponents of this body style. It offers good interior space and also a great set of features. It is also much more capable than any of the cars in this category because it has an excellent all-wheel-drive system. However, it is not as luxurious as some of its rivals and hence fails to grab the same crowd despite costing a lot less.

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon Final Verdict

The new Volvo V60 Cross Country is one of the most interesting cars we have around. It has a very large number of strengths and manages to be very practical as well. It has quite a lot of features on the interior and is also very spacious while having an extremely classy and minimalistic design on the outside. There are a wide variety of reasons to pick it and hence we are sure that we would buy it in 2021.
