Expert Review

CARHP Editorial June 10, 2019

The 2017 Volvo V60 Polestar is the high performance tweaked variant of the V60 that has the same safety assurance as any other Volvo but also offers a good amount of performance-oriented tweaks like the Twin charged I-4 engine that has better output than anything comparable in the class.

The V60 has got IIHS safety ratings above satisfactory level, but the rivals are pretty forward in safety but again not to forget it is the cheapest of them all. The NHTSA is yet to test the V60, but the company assures you about the safety measures. Talking about the economy, the V60 is not very costly and is best in class mileage.

2017 Volvo V60 Polestar Wagon Features

The 2017 V60 comes in 4 variants or trims starting from $38250 as the base model. The Volvo's Sensus Connect infotainment system is standard in all trims.

Cross country

18" wheels, sunroof, power adjustable front seats, xenon headlamps

Contains all features of Dynamin trim plus an adaptive xenon headlights

Includes turbo and supercharged 2.0L (302hp and 295 lb-ft) engine and AWD.

Contains all features of cross country and R-design.

Driver seat memory setting, and also the standard is Volvo's Sensus connect infotainment system which includes 7" display screen, Bluetooth, voice control, navigation Auto-dimming mirrors and Harman Kardon sound system with 12 speakers The T6 also features R-Design- specific outer trim such as grille
The USB port, an audio system with 8 speakers   rear fascia, and silver window
CD player and satellite and HD radio.   surrounds and roof rails. Also includes Harman Kardon sound system and vision packages.

Wagons are known for their all-terrain capability and rough terrains require AWD. But Dynamic and Cross Country lack AWD. R-Design and Polestar feature AWD and an improved engine as well. They produce 50 more hp than the remaining two and that's a big difference.

We recommend

AWD is a must for a wagon to perform in off-road conditions. Dynamic and Cross country lack AWD. Then you should go for the R-design rather than Polestar which don't any additional features except the polestar tag. The polestar tag is the race symbol of Volvo.

2017 Volvo V60 Polestar Wagon Engine

Polestar manages to outclass all its rivals with the twin charged engine. It produces 295lb-ft of torque that powers this wagon through thick and thin. The 302 horses present under the hood charge this chariot to the required destination without much hassle.

The Polestar division sprinkled the V60 with some magic performance fairy dust and voila its class-leading now. The performance tweaks not only makes the car better to drive but drives the price up too.

The V60 triumphs over its competitors and takes the cake in this parameter. With the BMW being almost a second slower than the V60 Polestar it only says volume about the Polestar divisions expertise and commitment to the tarmac. The upgraded 8-speed automatic transmission is a welcome addition.

Ride and Handling

Handling is a major factor to be considered before buying a car, it is the car's ability to go through sharp corners at high speeds. Thanks to the full time all wheel drive system in V60 which makes the full from all 4 wheels and can go quite fast through corners. It shifts the power between the front and rear axle during a corner so well that its behavior becomes so much predictable that it can be controlled easily. The Shockers are pretty stiff, but the car holds the road well. Talking about the suspension, it is not adjustable for road and off-road conditions. It has only the factory setting which is comfortable in city drive. It has got low ground clearance hence the shocks are quite stiff. The V60 may provide a harsh ride during off-road conditions.

Braking is a factor not only in performance but also in safety. So, one should go for the car with the least braking distance.

The brake pedal feels soft due to power assistance. In case of panic braking, the V60 has the ABS with ESC (electronic stability control) and the directional stability control.

The V60 is pretty slow in stopping. This wagon is the lightest of them all but yet has the largest stopping distance. This may be due to the small disc rotors that V60 is using to reduce weight. The overall braking performance is below satisfactory and is outclassed by the Audi A4.

2017 Volvo V60 Polestar Wagon Fuel Economy

After being lagged behind in the acceleration, the V60 has the advantage of mileage due to its small displacement engine. Fuel economy is the major factor influencing the ongoing cost of the car.

MPG (combined)

The clear leader in this category is Volvo V60. If we take a look at mpg on the highway it clearly wins the competition. Since it is the cheapest competitor in the segment and has the highest mileage and be considered as the lowest ongoing wagon.

2017 Volvo V60 Polestar Wagon Interior

Seating and Comfort

For providing comfort the V60 seats are ergonomically designed and also offers armrests to the driver for both the arms. The V60 is behind the Subaru in providing room to the occupants and also from the BMW but is slightly in front of the Audi A4 Allroad. The legroom for back seat passengers should be sufficient but seems less against the rivals.

The heated seats and the steering wheel is now standard in V60 and also the sports seats are optional. The shoulder and headroom at the back seat should be enough for average height people. The handling is pretty much good which will never make you worry about it.

Cargo Space

In case of cargo space, the V60 stood second after the Subaru Outback which is tremendous in passenger room. It also leads it's bigger sister in behind the space which is an achievement because V60 is the smallest in length.

Behind 2nd row (ft. cube)

In the scenario of cargo space, the V60 provides 43.8 cubic feet of storage room behind the first row. The drive system of the V60 has made the vertical space less otherwise there could be more space behind the second row.

Infotainment System

The Volvo is using the Volvo's census connect infotainment system in the 2017 V60. This system uses 7" central display and provides navigation, voice control, and an audio system. The audio system includes 8 speakers, Bluetooth, a USB port, CD player and satellite and HD radio. There is an optional system which is called the Harman Kardon sound system along with 12 speakers and some vision packages.

This infotainment system is not a touch screen which is dated. This system is not much advanced as it won't allow switching between calls. The system is almost compatible with most of the smartphones.

Interior features

  • Heated seats and steering
  • Optional sports seats
  • Black interior with contrast stitching
  • Harman Kardon sound system

Length (in)

Width (in)

The Volvo V60 is the lightest and the most mileage giving wagon. In terms of ground clearance, the V60 is the lowest of all. But it does not allow much suspension travel which leads to harsh ride in off-road conditions. Since it has less length of them all and offers less legroom for back seat passengers.

Exterior Features

The first thing that comes to the mind is Thor's Hammer LED front headlamps. The long hood and the multi-slat chrome grill makes the car look luxury. The front spoiler looks good with aero lips and makes the car look wide. The front spoiler also provides a considerable at higher speeds. The rear lamps vertically stacked and look good with the rear window tint. The side projections give the car a sharp and slim look.

2017 Volvo V60 Polestar Wagon Safety

Volvo is known for their safety and comfort provided in their cars. The V60 is loaded with a variety of features that aid the safety of the occupants. The car has longitudinal beams to bear side impact and in the front is properly engineered crumple zone. Moving to higher trims, they got knee airbag for the driver and also the airbag occupancy sensor. The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and the Roll Stability Control (RSC) are quite helpful while driving the car faster. Also got ABS and driveline traction control, but the ABS is unable to stop the car in a short distance as compared to the rivals. It has got a rear parking sensor if you are not good at reverse parking. The reverse parking camera is optional.

Safety Features

  • Dstc Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and the Roll Stability Control (RSC)
  • ABS and Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Rear Parking Sensors

2017 Volvo V60 Polestar Wagon Competition

BMW 330i Wagon

The BMW 3 Series Wagon is a very viable option when it comes to a wagon. Tamer and geared more towards a family man this wagon has almost everything going for it and has great storage space too.

Audi A4 Allroad Premium

The Audi A4 Allroad tries to put up with the rest of the competitors but is outclassed by the BMW and the Polestar. The only place it shines is the cargo department and shall be able to a load a lot of stuff as compared to the V60, the only segment where it falters.

Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited

The Subaru Outback 3.6R is a great contender in the list. It is the lowest in price, the maximum amount of room (passenger and cargo), best ride quality and comfort. If you do not worry about the mileage, should definitely go for the Subaru Outback 3.6R.

2017 Volvo V60 Polestar Wagon Final Verdict

The Volvo V60 Polestar remains ahead of the competition with the select tweaks provided by your friendly Swede the Polestar. Volvo manages to produce an ageless design that surpasses its competition and provides a fun and peppy ride that is suited for the cities and the highways but may not be the best for off-roading downtrodden tracks.
