Since the Volvo XC40 Recharge is just a newbie in the automotive market, it’s hard for it to get some upgrades from Volvo but as per the customer’s feedback, Volvo might make some improvements. The 2022 XC40 will be exactly corresponding to the current model and will still be powered by the dual electric motors with the all-wheel-drive system but with some updates in the battery management system, it might claim more than 208 miles of range. The 2022 XC40 Recharge will directly compete with the Tesla Model Y & the Jaguar I-Pace.

We Recommend

There is not much to choose from the 2021 XC40 list when opting for an all-electric vehicle and it will be the stand-alone electric sub-compact SUV in the Volvo garage in 2022. So, for someone who is looking for a car in this segment then XC40 Recharge is definitely worth considering and who knows if the upcoming version might come with a better power management system with a better range.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Release Date

The 2021 version of the Volvo XC40 is a big success in the EV market and the automaker has already started working on the 2022 XC40 Recharge. The vehicle will surely be getting the 2022 version and Volvo will introduce it pretty soon around the end of the year 2021 and audiences might be able to book this vehicle in Jan 2022 and expect the reveal of the vehicle showrooms in Feb or March.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The 2021 Volvo XC40 is powered by a dual electric motor system, it’s a fully electric powertrain. One motor powers the front two wheels of the car and the other one moves the rear wheels, both motors work in harmony to deliver a combined power of 402 horsepower and the 486 lb-ft of initial & constant torque. Electric vehicles have the ability to launch themselves with all the torque they have at zero RPM.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV Top Driving View

The 2022 Volvo XC40 will not be any different from the current version, it will also use the same powertrain to run all four wheels of the car with the aid of the all-wheel-drive system. Most electric vehicles don’t use any type of gearbox but for final transmission the differential is necessary and that is what XC40 Recharge does. It uses a single-speed direct transmission. XC40 Recharge is very on its wheels as it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph within just 4.7 seconds but the top speed of the car is slightly low around 112 mph.

All four vehicles run with the aid of the dual electric motor system, one motor powers the front two wheels, and the other one rotate the rear wheels. As we all know that an electric vehicle doesn’t show any sign of lag and this can be seen in the data mentioned above, Volvo XC 40 is the most powerful in the house but due to the 27 pound-feet of less torque than the Jaguar I-Pace, it arrives at the second position in 0 to 60mph acceleration test, Tesla Model Y Lang Range is not much behind the Volvo but even with the equal power figures Audi e-tron seems to be short on the performance and finishes last in the table. The top speed of XC40 Recharge is also lower than its competitors. Whereas Tesla Model Y Long Range costs the least but has some better performance figures considering its price range.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV Fuel Economy

8.0/10

Nowadays, electric vehicles are packed with a battery which is measured in kWh and Volvo XC40 Recharge gets a usable battery pack of 75kWh. The EV uses the battery pack to run the vehicle and given below in the table is the battery consumed by the vehicles per 100 miles, lower the consumption means the better will be the overall vehicle’s range. Volvo XC40 Recharge consumes 39.6 kWh in city driving, 46.8 kWh on straight highways, and 42.7kWh under combined conditions. The battery pack is also a decent-sized 75 kWh.

Battery Consumption of Volvo XC40 Recharge is slightly higher than its competitors, it consumes around 42.7 kWh for 100 miles of range in the combined conditions. Whereas on the other hand, Tesla Model Y Long Range consumes only 27.9 kWh for 100 miles, due to the unavailability of data for Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron nothing can be said about them but the Audi e-tron’s bigger battery pack certainly offers more range than the XC40 Recharge. The slightly more performance in XC40 Recharge reduces the range of the vehicle, but Tesla has optimized its vehicle quite impressively as it claims around 269 miles with almost the same battery capacity and performance as Volvo.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV Interior

7.0/10

The only differences between the XC40 Recharge and the gasoline XC40 are its powertrain and a little changed exterior styling. The vehicle is appropriately designed to offer great comfort and premium ride quality to the passengers, there is an ample amount of space for taller people, and it’s also quite easy to get in or out of the vehicle. The tilt & telescopic steering wheel allow the rider to adjust the driving position as per his/her requirements.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV Dashboard

There are plenty of convenience features like dual-zone automatic climate control which allows the driver and passenger to set different temp settings, 8-way power-adjustable seats provide the required tight and back support, the use of nubuck upholstery with ambient lighting to make the interior plusher and plenty of storage spaces to keep your device and other things while traveling.

All four vehicles can travel with a total of 5 occupants as standard but Tesla provides the optional third-row seats at an additional cost of $3000, which increases the occupancy of the Tesla Model Y Long Range to 7. Volvo XC40 Recharge isn’t the spacious one amongst the rivals and when it comes to the space for the passengers it certainly lacks in this department and takes the fourth position in the list.

The Tesla Model Y offers a spacious cabin and after that Jaguar I-Pace acquires the second and Audi e-tron the third place. On the second-row seats, Audi-eTron feels pretty roomy with the best in class 57.3 inches of shoulder room but for the taller passengers, Tesla Model Y Long Range makes more sense. Some highlights of features inside the cabin of XC40 Recharge:

  • Electrochromatic IRVM
  • Nubuck leather upholstery
  • 8-way power-adjustable front driver & passenger seats
  • Keyless ignition
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Steering mounted audio and cruise controls
  • Tilt & telescopic steering wheel
  • Heated driver & passenger seats

How intuitive is the infotainment system?

Volvo has also taken care of the entertainment of the occupant of the Xc40 Recharge, they have designed a 9-inch tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system with the collaboration of Google. For the vehicle’s information, the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display placed behind the steering wheel shows all the info regarding the vehicle like its range, battery performance, battery health, speed, odometer, and etc.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV Infotainment System

The infotainment system uses an 8-speaker 250 watts stereo output to play your favorite songs, whereas an optional 8-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system is also available at an additional cost of $800. Some highlights of infotainment system are:

  • 9-inch Touchscreen infotainment display
  • 8-Speaker audio system
  • 8-Speaker Harman Kardon audio system (optional)
  • USB with external media control
  • Satellite radio with AM/FM stereo
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto smartphone integration
  • Wireless smartphone charging
  • 12.3-inch Digital gauge cluster

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV Exterior

7.0/10

The exterior design of the Volvo XC40 Recharge almost mimics the design language of the regular gasoline XC40 and the 2022 version will correspond to it. Just like all the EV manufacturers, Volvo has also given this vehicle a futuristic sort of look which certainly makes it different from the crowd. The front end gets a solid body panel as there is no need for any vents to cool the IC engine and the tri-arrow design DRLs make the front more appealing.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV Side View

From the side profile, the big shiny 19-inch alloy wheels certainly cast an impact on the audience and for the more SUV look the feel arches and running board is covered with the black plastic claddings. The gasoline fuel cap replaces the charging port and it doesn’t make it awkward for regular users. The Recharge badge on the back of the vehicle also distinguishes it from the XZC40 lineup.

The Tesla Model Y Long Range is the lightest SUV with a curb weight of 4416 pounds, the other two weigh around 350 pounds more than it. Volvo XC40 Recharge is not the longest in the segment but it’s the tallest and has better ground clearance than the others and the smallest 106.4 inches of wheelbase makes it easy for the driver to maneuver the vehicle under the tight city conditions. Tesla and Jaguar beat one another in different sections but it would be relatively hard to take turns in both of them. Some highlights of the exterior features have been mentioned below:

  • 19-inch Alloy wheels
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Turn indicators integrated ORVMs
  • Heated ORVMs
  • Keyless entry

7.0/10

Volvo has worked so many years just to provide class-leading products to its customers and build their trust over the brand and to prove this statement, the IIHS has awarded Volvo XC40 Recharge with ‘Top Safety Pick+’ which definitely tells us about how safe the product is. 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV Competition

7.0/10

Volvo XC40 Recharge Vs Tesla Model Y Long Range

Tesla has been in the EV market for a long time and has consistently launched reliable products in the market. Volvo is also known for its reliability and loyalty towards its customers but EV is a new thing for them and they are certainly not as experienced as Tesla.

2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range Front Angle View

The XC40 Recharge and Model Y have somewhat similar drivetrain systems and corresponding battery capacity but due to some extra performance, Volvo claims low range than the competition and for a family, a slight difference in the performance doesn’t make the cut. From the inside, both of them have different interior styling, Tesla looks much more futuristic whereas Volvo has the resemblance of its gasoline vehicles.

Volvo XC40 Recharge Vs Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar radiates completely different vibes, it belongs to the luxury SUV segment and is definitely not made for regular family usage. It also costs $16,000 more than the XC40 Recharge.

2022 Jaguar I-Pace Front Angle View

There is surely a difference between their performance figures and Jaguar has a much more premium & luxury cabin which is covered in high-quality materials but that performance takes its toll on the battery management and delivers less range than Volvo. All these things are not worth spending the extra $16,000.

Volvo XC40 Recharge Vs Audi e-tron

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is not the best luxury vehicle in the US automotive industry, it’s just luxurious enough for the regular people who are searching for a vehicle just above the budget-friendly segment but the Audi e-tron offers a mix of both sporty and luxury cabin.

2022 Audi e-tron Front Angle View

Although the power & torque figures are almost even but XC40 recharge excels in performance at least on the papers plus it can also travel to a greater distance. For someone who wants just enough luxurious appeal with performance and a lower price tag then opt for XC40 Recharge.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV Final Verdict

In 2021 Volvo released its first official electric SUV the XC40 Recharge, the core design, and engineering is based on the base gasoline version of the XC40 which was first introduced in the market back in 2019. The product is a complete success and gives a proper neck-to-neck fight to other competitors, as it’s just a newbie that’s why it’s hard for it to get some major upgrades in the upcoming 2022 version. If there is an urgent requirement for a vehicle, rather than hoping for an all-new XC40 Recharge just go and grab the 2021 version.
