We recommend

Even though the base 3.2 trim of the SUV has more than enough features to keep you in comfort, it fails to offer an impressive performance from its engine, thus we would recommend the T-6 trim for better performance. Apart from the solid feel from the engine under the hood, it also keeps the price tag in check when compared to the upper R-Design trim which costs at least $4,000 more.

2013 Volvo XC60 Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The Volvo XC60 is available with two engine options. Models with a 3.2 designation have a six-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower, which struggles to get the SUV up to speed with urgency. The T6 and R-Design models have a turbocharged six-cylinder that is tuned to 300- and 325-horsepower, respectively. Either version of this engine is a far better match for the SUV than the base power plant.

The six-cylinder offers strong acceleration at city speeds, robust passing power on the highway, and a decent fuel economy of 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The XC60 3.2 gets 19/25 mpg city/highway. Volvo estimates that the 3.2 takes 9.1 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph, which would be quite slow for the luxury SUVs against which it competes.

The T6 R-Design gets a more powerful version of this engine, good for 325 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive are also standard. On paper, the Volvo XC60 seems comparable to its competitors in terms of its engine performance, however, in reality, the performance leaves much to be desired. However, despite not having a responsive punchy engine, it has the highest top speed among its competitors.

2013 Volvo XC60 Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The fuel economy for the 2013 Volvo XC60 actually leaves a lot to be desired. The Base XC60 models earn an EPA rating of 19/25 mpg with all-wheel drive. The problem with that is that we can think of plenty of three-row SUVs that meet the highway number. And if you upgrade to the T6 or R-Design, the numbers dip to 17/23 mpg, which are numbers you'd otherwise see for some vehicles a size larger.

The EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined with front-drive and 18/24/20 respectively with all-wheel drive. Both are average for the segment. The Volvo XC60 comparatively has lower fuel efficiency in the segment. It has a decent fuel tank capacity, which despite its low fuel efficiency, provides a higher travel range.

2013 Volvo XC60 Interior

7.0/10

The XC60’s interior is sleek and understated. There are many controls and buttons in the dash, but they are easy to identify and use, most notably the ventilation controls in the shape of a human. To direct air to your upper body, just hit the figure’s "head." Contrasting colors adorn seats and door panels and the bucket-style front seats are very comfortable.

The rear seat is particularly roomy along with a high seat cushion, above-average headroom, and decent legroom for adults. The available integrated dual child booster seats are a great feature. All the crossovers offer a seating capacity of 5 in the segment. The crossover has a cargo capacity of 30.8 cubic feet, which is the biggest number in the competition.

Volvo has been making an effort in recent years to give its vehicles some interior flair, and the five-passenger XC60 is the brand's best result yet. The thin-panel center stack which comes with metallic trim as standard and real wood trim as an option combined with the optional two-tone upholstery results in the XC60's cabin looking both modern and inviting. Major interior features include:

  • Two-tone black and beige seats
  • Front And Rear Seats Are Comfortable
  • Heated Seats
  • Rearview Camera
  • Navigation System
  • Large Sunroof

How intuitive is the 2013 Volvo XC60 infotainment unit?

Standard features in the XC60 include Bluetooth, HD Radio, satellite radio, auxiliary and USB inputs, and an eight-speaker stereo. The gauges are large and clear, as are the audio and climate functions. A navigation system, a 12-speaker Dolby Pro-Logic Surround Sound system, and a dual-screen rear-seat DVD entertainment system are optional. Major infotainment features include:

  • Audio system with satellite and HD radio
  • USB and auxiliary ports
  • Bluetooth
  • Eight speaker sound system
  • Navigation system (Optional)
  • 12-speaker Dolby Pro-Logic Surround Sound system (Optional)

2013 Volvo XC60 Exterior

9.0/10

The 2013 Volvo XC60 is offered in nine colors, where the metallic colors carry an additional charge. The base 3.2 model features 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights with headlight washers, roof rails, automatic wipers, and heated mirrors. The R-Design models have stylish 20-inch wheels that lessen the XC60’s off-road abilities in favor of more pavement performance. The Volvo XC60 resembles the Audi Q3 closely in terms of dimensions, except that the Volvo XC60 has the highest ground clearance in this segment.

The vehicle’s roof rails are low to reduce wind noise, and an optional crossbar system can be attached to carry bikes, kayaks, skis, and more. The SUV doesn't carry the heaviest curb weight, which is done by the BMW X3 in the competition. When comparing the wheelbase, again BMW has the most at 110.6 inches. Major exterior highlights of the XC60 include:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels (Base 3.2 model)
  • 20-inch alloy wheels (R-Design models)
  • Automatic wipers
  • Heated mirrors
  • New tunnel-detection system for the headlamps

2013 Volvo XC60 Safety

6.0/10

In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2013 Volvo XC60 received 5 (out of 5) stars for front- and side-impact protection, and 4 stars for rollover protection. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the XC60 received "Good" ratings for all impact protection tests. Apart from the structural strength of the SUV, the XC60 also brings a variety of safety features to the table. Few salient safety features include:

  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Active front head restraints
  • Front side airbags, and side curtain airbags
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • A proprietary pedestrian-detection system

2013 Volvo XC60 Final Verdict

The 2013 Volvo XC60 neither offers an extraordinary engine performance nor does it come with segment-leading fuel economy, however, the emphasis on the car has greatly been towards the safety, build-quality, and reliability of the car. Nothing comes close to the 2013 Volvo XC60 when it comes to providing a family-friendly, safe, and sturdy crossover with an appealing exterior.
