Overview

Volvo's XC90 has been the first choice of many customers as it packs powerful engine coupled with a lavishly built interior. A car that carries many traits of her elder sibling at a lower price tag. What do you lose with that lower price tag? The Engine is little less powerful and few luxurious options have been taken out of it, which you should not mind at the windows sticker price of Volvo XC60.

Expert Review

Volvo XC60 T8 variants get their power from an inline 4 cylinder engine coupled with the electric motor to produce a total of 400 horsepower. As the engine growls representing the power, the interior stays quiet and elegant just like any high-end luxury car.

Features

Although the XC60 Hybrid is further available in Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design which are purely based on the features offered. The 2018 XC60 has got LED lights along with the interestingly named  Thor's Hammer DRL. SiriusXM Satellite radio is pretty standard these days with the digital instrument cluster. The interior is luxuriously beautiful. XC60 does stand out as a younger sibling to XC90 SUV.

  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 6-Month Subscription

  • Low and High Speed Collision Mitigation, Pedestrian, Cyclist and Large Animal Detection

Engine

The Volvo XC60 T8 gets its power from a 2.0 liter inline four cylinder engine which is coupled with an electric motor to give some extra power and fuel economy. Both the gas engine and the electric motor combined make a total of 400 horsepower. Power is transferred to all the four wheels through an 8-Speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

When compared with the competition, other cars are powered by a 3.0-liter V6 engine along with the electric motor. And this combination produces 416 HP in Cayenne SE, 436 HP in GLE 550e. While the Acura MDX Sport produces merely 321 horsepower. Porsche gets an 8-speed automatic transmission, Acura comes with a 7-speed automatic while the Benz has a fully automatic transmission.

Volvo XC60 is a smaller and lighter car here takes the advantage of its comparatively lighter body weight to achieve a quicker 0-60 mph than the rest. XC60 does 0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds compared to 5.5 seconds in the Porsche, 6.2 seconds achieved by the Acura and the 5.2 seconds of timing achieved by the Mercedes.

Braking

Volvo has equipped the XC60 with 13.6 inches brakes in the front and 12.6 inches brakes in the rear. And those brakes sounds good on a spec sheet. Also because the car is lighter than the competition, it will take comparatively smaller distance to reach from 60 mph to stand still. But unfortunately, we do not have the actual numbers here for that specific performance for the XC60.

Cars with more weight and weak brakes are taking 130+ feet of distance to reach standstill from 60 mph mark. So we can expect the Volvo XC60 to achieve the same in a bit smaller distance. But we can’t be sure unless we test it out.

Ride and Handling

You don’t see Volvo often, marketing its cars on the basis of the horsepower. It’s not even like XC60 produces less horsepower. Yes, the 400HP is a little less than it’s competition but still, it is powerful enough to pull one and a half ton of weight.

So we know that performance is not the Volvo's priority. That doesn’t mean the car isn’t fearsome. It isn’t really fearsome but the car is quick. You feel the control over the steering and when you push the gas paddle, you’re being thrown in those super comfortable Volvo seats.

Fuel Economy

The XC60 T8 is claimed to offer 26 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway. The combined MPF with the electric motor and gasoline goes around 59 MPGe while the EV range is estimated at 18 miles. On the rival side, the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid offers similar figures in terms of MPG in the city. Overall, the fuel efficiency is decent for a hybrid SUV of this segment.

Interior

“The XC60’s interior is a palace of Scandinavian design and exotic (at least for a car) materials. The components of its construction include Nappa leather, real metal, “Driftwood deco” accents with natural texture, and even crystal from Swedish firm Orrefors in the gearshift lever. As for the most common element in cars today – plastic – there are only trace amounts of it to see and feel in the XC60’s interior.”- motor1

Seating and Comfort

The XC60 Hybrid SUV can seat a total of 5 people, 2 in the front row and 3 in the rear one. XC60 might be smaller than the competition and than it’s sibling but it still can seat all the five people without any issue of discomfort. Headroom space of 38 inches is same for both the rows  41.5” of legroom for front row and 38.0” of legroom in the rear. And surprisingly the rear seats will fit you comfortably.

Cargo

The cargo is a bit of issue in this car. The car has just 63.3 cubic feet of storage in the boot. Yes, the Porsche has even less boot space but no one buys a Porsche for cargo storage. To put the boot space in Volvo to a perspective, Volvo has 5 cubic feet of space less than the Acura and 17 cubic feet of space less than the Benz. And I tell you, that matters. But for the most plans, the Volvo XC60 can hold up a good amount of luggage in its boot.

Towing Capacity

Volvo XC60 comes from an SUV family, so you obviously expect it to be able to tow some luggage when needed. Thankfully, unlike Porsche, Volvo XC60 can tow a maximum of 3500 lbs. of luggage. It is same as what Acura tows but it is almost 1000 lbs. lesser than what the GLE 550e can tow.

Exterior

“The XC60 has been completely redesigned, and where the last generation was all curves and bends, the new one adds sharper character lines and a smattering of creases. Still instantly recognizable as a Volvo, the new look was inspired by the XC60’s big brother, the XC90, and it very clearly works at 4:5 scale.” – motor1

Dimension and Weight

The Volvo XC60 is a small car, in terms of dimensions and weight. When measuring the length of the car, you will find that the XC60 is 6 inches smaller than Porsche, 12 inches smaller than Acura and 5 inches smaller than the Benz. Body width of the Volvo XC60 falls in the same category as the other SUVs, at 78.7 inches. While the height of the XC60 is on average 3 inches smaller than the others, at 65.3 inches. With the ground clearance of 8.5 inches, the car is expected to clear all the rough bumps without any issue. The wheelbase of 2018 XC60 is at 112.8 inches and is responsible for great cabin space.

Competition

Volvo XC60 Hybrid VS Porsche Cayenne SE Hybrid

Porsche's Cayenne Hybrid offering is a sports car under the luxury disguise. But the Volvo is purely luxury vehicle. The Porsche feels sporty, unlike XC60. And Cayenne comes with two extra cylinders which doesn’t make the car much powerful. Even with inline four-cylinder in the XC60, it just produces a few horsepower lesser than the Cayenne but it much quicker than Cayenne. I feel like I would choose XC60 over Cayenne here.

Volvo XC60 Hybrid VS Acura MDX Hybrid Sport

MDX is Honda's try on luxury cars. And it does not totally flop. MDX comes with a plethora of luxury features to give a tough competition to the rivals. The MDX has a 3.0L V6 engine compared to the 2.0L I4 engine in XC60. And with a powerful engine, it just produces a few more horsepower than the XC60. MDX is also lighter than the XC60 but still is slower than the XC60. And the luxuriously built interior just catches your eyes. XC60's interior even looks and feels better than the MDX.

Volvo XC60 Hybrid VS Mercedes-Benz GLA 550e

Mercedes-Benz GLA 550e is a proper rival to XC60. The car is luxurious, powerful and quick. It gets a lot more boot space than the XC60. The only downside in the GLA 550e that the XC60 is a few milliseconds quicker. Apart from that, GLA 550e beats the XC60 in the other departments. But the GLA 550e comes with 10 grand higher windows sticker price. So it’s up to your preference if you want can afford the performance that GLA 550e delivers over the XC60.

Final Verdict

Volvo's XC60 R8 Hybrid is not about power. This car is all about comfort and luxury. And the XC60 delivers what it promises. That doesn’t mean that the car lacks power. It still packs a powerful engine packed with a powerful electric motor. Which not only gives amazing power but provide great fuel efficiency, more than the rest of hybrid SUVs. If you’re not into fun kind of riding experience in a hybrid SUV, Volvo XC60 T8 is exactly what you need.
