The 2017 Volvo XC90 is the best luxury offering from the Swedish automaker. Outshining the rivals, the XC90 is as impressive as a premium SUV can get. Starting off with its charismatic exterior appearance, coupled with its feature-rich and exquisite interior setup, there is no area where the XC90 cannot ace. Furthermore, it also retains the T8 plug-in-hybrid model and the uber-luxurious XC90 Excellence model.

Starting over at an MSRP of $45,750, the XC90 for the year 2017 gets a multitude of updates, which include a new 2.0L turbocharged engine joining the lineup. The interior is where the changes are more evident, with the XC90's infotainment system now getting more apps, whereas the new T5 model is offered as a 5-seater unlike the T6 and T8 models being offered as 7-seaters.

There is hardly anything that differentiates the 2017 Volvo XC90 from the 2016 iteration. Feature-wise or not, the 2017 XC90 is the go-to luxury vehicle in this class for sure. With best-in-class EPA-rated MPG figures, interior space including cargo volume, and an athletic exterior front all for less than $47,000, the 2017 XC90 is a bang value for money deal. Volvo seems to be doing no wrong even on the power front, as it offers both gasoline and hybrid variants too. Rivals of the 2017 Volvo XC90 include the Acura MDX, the BMW X5, and the Lexus RX 350.

We Recommend

With everything in mind, the T6 Inscription variant to us sounds the best. For a nominal price of MSRP $57,350 that too for a luxury crossover, the Inscription trim gets all of the bells and whistles one would require in an SUV of such caliber. The 7-seater capacity vehicle is further powered by both a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0L engine. Exclusively fitted to this variant are also some of the best-in-class interior features.

2017 Volvo XC90 Engine and Performance

8.0/10

Despite having a four-cylinder-only lineup, the XC90’s powertrain choices, especially the 316-hp supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4, proved up to the task and doesn’t struggle on the road - Motortrend

2017 Volvo XC90 Engine and Transmission

The 2017 Volvo XC90 comes with a range of engine options. Volvo also differentiates the different variants with respect to the different engine options. For instance, the T5 model of the XC90 is powered by a 2.0L turbo four-unit which pushes out 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Carrying over the power duties in the next XC90 T6 model is a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0L Inline-4 unit putting out 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Next-in-line is the new plug-in-hybrid T8 model, which is privy to the XC90 Excellence. This uses up the supercharged and turbocharged 2.0L engine from the T6 model and couples it to an electric motor, thus providing 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. Available in both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive setups, the 2017 XC90 comes with a standard 8-speed automatic transmission to put the power down efficiently.

Torque 295 lb-ft @ 2200 RPM 267 lb-ft @ 4700 RPM 300 lb-ft @ 1200 RPM 268 lb-ft. @ 4700 RPM

The base engine of the XC90, might not stand a chance against these rivals, but the other engines do give the rivals a run for their money. The XC90, for sure delivers segment-best epic sheer performance attributes all for a consumer-friendly price tag. This is due to the fact that all of the said engines have been refined by Volvo's Polestar department, for better power and torque figures, especially in the T8 model.

2017 Volvo XC90 Acceleration

The 2017 Volvo XC90, with the base 2.0L turbocharged engine in play, can sprint from 0-60 MPH in a tad less than 7 seconds. Whereas, when equipped with both the turbocharger and supercharger, the 2017 XC90, can do the same sprint in just about 6.3 seconds, all the while crossing the quarter-mile barrier in just about 14.7 seconds.

Models 2017 Volvo XC90 2017 Acura MDX 2017 BMW X5 2017 Lexus RX 350
0-60 MPH 6.3 sec 6.7 sec 6.2 sec 6.8 sec
Quarter mile 14.7 sec 15.0  sec 14.8 sec 15.1 sec

The engine fails to match up to its required RPM levels in the top end, and that is the reason, why the XC90 loses out to the BMW X5, by just a whisker. Nevertheless, with negligible turbo-lag, the 2017 XC90, is pretty athletic around town and freeways, being able to take on overtaking maneuvers quite easily. Moreover, one would expect the T8 model to put out better figures, but that's not the case, as it is also 450 lbs heavier than the previous version.

2017 Volvo XC90 Ride and Handling

Volvo encompasses you in its luxury and comfortable setting, as it also has the infamous ride and handling dynamics to thank for. Plenty of advanced features also aid in it delivering this feat. The XC90's handling can be described as athletic at best. Although, with a number of updates being included, the XC90 has also turned out to be quite heavy, which is felt around in corners, as body-roll does creep in. The multi-link rear suspension, also allows it to be supremely smooth when set in Comfort mode. There is also the Dynamic mode, which turns the XC90 into a respectable off-roader too. The highly responsive steering allows the driver to have a good command over the vehicle.

2017 Volvo XC90 Braking

The 2017 Volvo XC90, with 13.2-inch front rotor discs, and 12.1-inch rear rotor discs, is able to come to a complete stop from 60 MPH in just 120 ft. This might surprise some, as the rear rotor discs are much smaller than what the rest of the segment house. It only has its 4000 lbs heft to thank for.

Curb Weight (lbs.) 4,627 4,001 4,625 4222

Nevertheless, having said that, Volvo needs to upgrade the braking setup, as it takes quite a while after you set foot on the pedal, for the driver to experience the brakes being applied. Coming over to the competition, the BMW X5, comes to a stop in the least distance, courtesy of the biggest rotor discs, and also its heft.

2017 Volvo XC90 Fuel Economy

7.5/10

The 2017 Volvo XC90 delivers 22 MPG in the city and 26 miles to the gallon out on the highway, with its base engine on point and FWD setup. Opt for the AWD setup, and these figures go down by 1 MPG. Next in line with the turbocharged and supercharged 2.0L engine setup, the T6 model with the standard AWD setup delivers just about 20 MPG in the city and 25 miles to the gallon out on the highway.

MPG (highway) 25 27 25 27
MPG (combined) 22 22 21 23
Fuel capacity 18.8 gallons 19.5 gallons 22.4 gallons 19.2 gallons

Then comes, the brand new XC90 T8 plug-in-hybrid Excellence model, which has an EPA-rated 54 MPGe. Combine the base variant's fuel efficiency numbers and couple it with the 18.8-gallon fuel tank, and the 2017 XC90 can stretch up to 470 miles on the go-between fuel stops. The Lexus RX 350 is the most fuel-efficient car of the lot evidently, as it puts out the least power of the lot.

2017 Volvo XC90 Interior

8.5/10

2017 Volvo XC90 Seating and Comfort

Probably with one of the best cabins in the world, the 2017 Volvo XC90 is like none other. The absolute best and nothing else. The interior is wrapped up in high-quality materials, and loaded with convenience features right from the base trim. It is a modern cabin in its essence with the perforated leather upholstery and the big vertical touchscreen.

Volvo also introduces a new uber-luxurious Excellence model, that can seat only 4 average-sized adults in the utmost luxurious setting. The front seats have an 8-way adjustable functionality, whereas the rear seats have only 6-way. Moving onto the top trims, you also get power-adjustable seats with memory function. Heated and ventilated seats are standard throughout. The third-row seats in the T6 and T8 models are at best suited for small children.

Properly intuitive, the touchscreen is pretty easy to use, with clear-cut controls for each and every function. On the feature front, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still optional, whereas they need to be standard. Apart from that, the infotainment front also gets new apps, which includes Spotify too. For added convenience, audio requirements have also been met with the help of the premium Bower & Wilkins audio system.

Some of the infotainment features on offer are-

  • 9-inch touchscreen with navigation
  • Bluetooth and audio connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 10-speaker Bower & Wilkins audio system
  • Auxiliary audio input jack and USB ports

2017 Volvo XC90 Cargo Capacity

The 2017 Volvo XC90 gets a great cargo capacity of 15.8 cu. ft. This with the 5 seater. Coming onto the 7-seater crossover, behind the rear seats, the XC90 gets 41.3 cu. ft of cargo capacity, whereas with the rear seats folded down in a 60/40 manner, that space increases to 90.9 cu. ft. The XC90 also holds plenty of interior storage spaces inside the cabin.

For 2017, the rear cargo volume of the XC90 has increased a bit through proper optimization of packaging. It also has a rear automated liftback for ease of loading and unloading too.

2017 Volvo XC90 Exterior

8.0/10

The designers of the 2017 Volvo XC90 have pulled off a neat trick: they've made a large utility vehicle appear to be much smaller than it is—meaning it’s the least obvious luxury SUV in the segment - thecarconnection

The 2017 Volvo XC90 is definitely worth a second look. It features an athletic and sporty exterior silhouette. It follows an aerodynamic design language, with deep character lines flowing throughout the sides to the rear end. The infamous Volvo grille encompasses the whole front end, with the streamlined headlights flowing through the corners.

Volvo's unmistakable design language is seen along the width of the XC90 SUV. The 2017 XC90 is simply a well-rounded SUV. Feature additions to the tune of better exterior packages and also new and better wheel designs are also offered with the 2017 iteration. Coming onto the dimensions, it might not seem so, but the XC90 is both wider and taller than its rivals. Its 9.4-inch ground clearance also helps it to wade through small boulders and big bumps easily.

  • Heated power door mirrors
  • Power liftgate
  • 18-inch painted alloy wheels

2017 Volvo XC90 Safety

9.0/10

Volvo and safety are two such terms that have been unanimous with each other for ages. Volvo's built and sturdy quality is unprecedented, and it comes with a range of active and passive feature lists rarely seen before in a crossover. The 2017 iteration of the crossover has also performed impressively in both the IIHS and NHTSA safety crash tests. While the NHTSA gave it a 5 on 5 safety rating, the IIHS awarded it with a "Top Safety Pick" honor.

Some of the safety features included with the 2017 XC90 are-

  • City Safety – Low-speed collision avoidance support system, including, pedestrian, cyclist & large animal detection (day and night)
  • Run-off-Road Protection and Run-off-Road Mitigation
  • Roll Stability Control
  • Road Sign Information
  • Driver Alert
  • Lane change assist
  • Low tire pressure warning system

2017 Volvo XC90 Competition

2017 Volvo XC60 vs 2017 Acura MDX

The Acura MDX performs really well in terms of the outright feature list provided. The 2017 XC90 inches a bit more further forward in this race against the MDX for sure, given that it has probably one of the coolest interiors and exterior in this segment.

On the other hand, Acura MDX is priced the least in the segment, although if only it could have the power figures and acceleration times to match those figures, it would have made a great deal. Coming onto the EPA-rated MPG figures, the XC90 takes the cake here too. We recommend the 2017 Volvo XC90 in this comparison.

2017 Volvo XC60 vs 2017 BMW X5

Probably the closest competitor to the XC60, the X5 is the only rival in this segment that can match up to the XC90's performance quotient with Volvo's bigger supercharged and turbocharged engines. Although, when taking the turbocharged Volvo engine into account, you might have to forego the power front totally, as it's of no use.

With a higher MSRP than the XC90's, BMW also offers the X5 with a wide range of features, that are sure to make your ride much more worth it. Cargo-wise and fuel efficiency-wise, the XC90 is the clear winner, and our absolute recommendation out of the two.

2017 Volvo XC90 Final Verdict

With no major changes being brought about to this year's XC90 iteration from that of the 2016 model, apart from the new 4-seater uber-luxury Excellence model, we recommend you wait for the 2018 iteration, as reports suggest that the crossover should get a major top-to-bottom overhaul. Ardent buyers who prioritize luxury over anything else first should look no further. With best-in-class MPG ratings, cargo space, power figures, and the upscale exterior silhouette to match all of this, for $45,750, the 2017 XC90 is the crossover to buy.
