Now when the winds have changed their directions towards the EV segment, most of the manufacturers have already thrown one of their contenders to conquer a fair share of the same. Volvo, on the other hand, has come up with a completely different strategy. Their idea is to use the same badge that already has a reputation in the industry and sneak in the new powertrain while keeping everything else intact. On the outside, there's only a handful of differences that sets it apart from the regular XC90. 

The 2019 Volvo XC90 Plug-in Hybrid is pretty much the same as its regular sibling, with the same road manners and similar engagement behind the wheel. The XC90 PHEV is much calmer and composed on the road and there are minimal noise intrusions inside the cabin. However, history is witness that no Volvo has risen to the top immediately as they have always had to struggle to get their piece of the pie. Is it going to be the same with the XC90 PHEV as well? The Volvo XC90, with the features and the price it is offered at, is one of the best propositions available in the market. The looks remain unchanged with Swedish style and touches that can be seen on the LED headlights, taillights, wheel designs. These traits make the SUV look quite expensive than its actual value.

On the engine front, no matter what trim you select, you’ll get a four-cylinder turbocharged motor paired with a battery and an electric counterpart. With the prices for the hybrid trims starting from $64,950, the XC90 PHEV is surely on the expensive side, however, it compensates by offering a wide array of standard features. That said, let's compare it with its rivals to see how well does it fare against them.

Quite a lot of differences in the features Volvo adds to them. About the R-design? it is arguably the best looker here, Excellence is the most topped out trim that goes a trickle over $1,00,000, a full $32,000 over the R-design.

We would recommend T8 R-design as it has most of the features you would need at a pretty good price package. And the other reason? R-design wheel rims make the SUV look very sporty. We would also recommend the red color.

The XC90 T8 is offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, attached to an inline-four twin-charged engine with an electric motor to propel a combined 400 horsepower. Combining an inline-four with an electric motor helps a lot in the kind of torque the car can produce and here it is in abundance with 472 pound-foot. It feels pretty quick when compared to the XC90's gasoline-powered models. The 10.4 kWh lithium-ion battery can propel the car 19 miles with electric-only mode, all that distance in complete silence.

The BMW X5 xDrive 40e falls a lot short on the kind of power it offers. The competition is far ahead with GLE producing 436hp just trailing behind is the Cayenne with 416 horses. The XC90 is quick for sure at 400 hp but the dynamics the German cars have is incomparable here. Hands down the Porsche is the best driving car here.

Acceleration

The SUV has shown decent acceleration figures despite its size. The XC90 can sprint to 60 MPG in 7.5 seconds. However, other competitors are way faster in this regard. The BMW X5 turns out to be the fastest with 5.3 seconds. The best thing about the XC90 SUV is its calm and composed ride quality. It offers smooth cruising on any kind of terrain. The optional four-corner air suspension ($1,800 option in momentum and inspiration) further improves the ride quality. However, complete noise cancellation isn't available with air suspension equipped XC90.

The Mercedes-Benz is the quickest here and that's because they mate electric motor to not an I-4 unline BMW or Volvo but a 3 litre V6. Someone suprisingly follows in almost sportscar shoes-The Porsche Cayenne. The thing is that all these cars here have a quick 0-60 times, for SUVs to be able to do it in almost 7 seconds carrying an electric motor and batteries is phenomenal.

All the four wheels of Volvo XC90 come with steel disc brakes. The brake pedal is soft and inspires confidence while driving. The SUV offers a braking distance of 113 feet (halt from 60 mph). Also, the 2019 XC90 comes standard with automatic emergency braking.

Only Mercedes's data is available and for an SUV to stop in 130 ft. is phenomenal. But being at 5456 pounds and others being a lot lighter on their feet. The Mercedes might not be up to the mark. The Porsche has quite a lot of feel on those brake pads because it comes developed from sportscar pedigree than an off-roader. The biggest car is the lightest here, the Volvo. And the brakes complemented with the automation and the tricks Volvo has up its sleeve. Makes the XC 90 shine again.

Those folks at Volvo definitely were quite serious about the fuel efficiency when they decided to install a small four-cylinder into the large XC90. The XC90 is just marginally more efficient than the competitor even in most efficient guise. That's a real disappointment considering that XC90 also has compromised performance and engine refinement compared to the rivals.

Theres only combined data that we can compare with and clearly the Volvo is the most impressive here with 27 miles in a single gallon of gasoline with X5 the second best thanks to the Inline-4 both the cars get. The Mercedes and the Porsche has an economy of 21 and 22 mpg respectively.

A bit of a mixed bag from Volvo. Materials, design and workmanship are very good, class-leading in some areas. Ergonomics and functionality are behind the leaders. The centerpiece of the XC90 is a big 9-inch touchscreen that is quick to respond, but it controls more functions than it should.' - Edmunds

The XC90's interior offers amazing space and features. Right from the attractive options to the material quality, we only wish that there were more cars of this kind. The third row doesn't offer much space. However, it manages to offer more legroom than some of its prominent rivals. Available as option, the XC90 has either two or four massaging seats on offer, a rear-seat beverage cooler, a crystalline shifter knob, and handcrafted Swedish-crystal tumblers.

There's a panoramic sunroof available as standard across the range. The XC90 SUV offers best in class headroom in the segment. As per Volvo, there's equal importance to all the occupants. The Porsche Cayenne is swathed in good materials, the inspiration obviously flowing down from Panamera but that centre console does eats out on space. Teutonic cousins BMW and Mercedes-Benz do their usual good but XC90 and Porsche just throw the water out of the park. 

Cargo volume

The Volvo XC90`s exemplary exterior styling has turned out to be plus point by offering best in class luggage space across the lineup. With all three seats up, the XC90 offers a cargo volume of 16 cubic feet shared with Audi Q7. With the second row folded, the capacity increases to 42 cubic feet '3 marginally greater than the Audi Q7 (41 cubic feet).

The Porsche has the sporty soft-roader like looks and the curvy haunches and the lines might impress you. With Mercedes-Benz going on to the sharp and still a very subtle design language doesn't make it lose the charm the Benzes always had. The XC 90 doesn't feel up with paces when it is put through some. The Cayenne manages all that with ease. The XC 90 sure spoils you with creamy premium-ness but it just drips over its vehicle dynamics. It's clear Porsche is fun to drive and if you need that, it's a Porsche dealer to head to.

Though the same level of efficiency and the kind of shock the "i" cars have. The X5 misses on just the "shock" part and it does all the impressive hybrid trickery with a 2L engine. Which we think the elementary point of a hybrid system here and which other "Germans" here miss. 3L engine is a big one doesn't suffice the purpose. Honestly, the X5 comes closest to the XC 90 here which would cause you an eye of skeptism. With X5 they are now targeting both SUV and hybrid sector and with a price tag and range they are providing,

Its been two years since the inception of the second generation Volvo XC90 in the market. It still remains one of the most handsome and charming SUV inside-out. It did grip the market and it made a good foundation for itself and its smaller SUV siblings. It almost surpasses what competition had been delivering. The kind of package Volvo offers is phenomenal.
