2022 Volvo XC90 Engine
2022 Volvo XC90 comes equipped with a 2.0L Turbocharged inline-4 engine along with 8-speed automatic transmission. In the base T5 configuration, the figures stand at 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is optional on the T5 models and standard on the higher trims. Next up, the T6 configuration also adds supercharging to the mix, bumping the figures up to 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
Finally, Volvo also offers the T8 recharge plug-in hybrid model that adds a few electric motors, producing over 450 hp combined, making the XC90 a deceptively fast family crossover. All models are rated for towing up to 5000 pounds. Despite the small engine, overall performance is more than adequate, especially with the T6 and T8 models.

For the price, the Acura MDX is easily the most powerful option here with the standard V-6 engine. The BMW X5 comes next thanks to the bigger 3.0L Inline-6 powertrain. But it is the most expensive option here. Both the Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7 trail the pack in terms of power output, but the latter does get all-wheel drive as standard for better traction.
2022 Volvo XC90 Acceleration
Don’t let the small powertrain fool you; the 2.0L Turbo unit can propel the luxury crossover from 0 to 60 MPH in a respectable 7.4 seconds. It can cover the quarter-mile in 15.7 seconds. The potent gearbox makes sure there's enough grunt available in all situations, shifting cogs efficiently and quickly. Mid-range punch of the XC90 is particularly impressive, making overtakes on the highway a lot quicker. However, there is a slight delay as we climb up to highway speeds, especially with the T5 model.

The lighter and nimbler XC90 shoots ahead of the Audi Q7 in a straight line, despite the power deficit. However, both the BMW X5 and Acura MDX are noticeably quicker overall, thanks to their bigger engines. Opting for the T8 model will tip the scales in favor of the XC90, providing deceptively quick performance.
2022 Volvo XC90 Brake Performance
As standard, you get 13.6-inch brake rotors at the front and 12.6-inch brake rotors at the rear. The brakes on the 2020 Volvo XC90 are average for the class but it offers adequate stopping power and good modulation. Even at higher speeds, the brakes feel surefooted and stable. Opting for the hybrid model will also include regenerative braking, although it does rob some accuracy.

Thanks to the lower curb weight, the Volvo XC90 is able to drop anchor faster than the Audi Q7. The brakes also feel surefooted and accurate. With a lighter curb weight, the Acura MDX also performs surprisingly well in the braking department. BMW X5 continues to top the charts despite its weight, albeit by a small margin.
2022 Volvo XC90 Handling
The 2022 Volvo XC90 has always prioritized comfort over handling, and the latest model continues that trend. The accurate steering makes driving engaging with accurate inputs, although the soft suspension setup leads to body roll when going around curves.
The optional air suspension further improves comfort, absorbing all the road imperfections. But, the XC90 can get caught out on some sharp road bumps.
2022 Volvo XC90 MPG Figures
An advantage of the smaller 2.0L Turbo unit is efficiency. The base T5 model delivers an impressive 30 MPG on the highway and 21 MPG in the city. As standard, you get an 18.8-gallon fuel tank. On a full tank, it delivers a range of more than 560 miles. Even with the more powerful T6 model, MPG drops down by a small margin; it returns 19 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway.

2022 Volvo XC90 is easily the most efficient option here thanks to the smaller powertrain and light chassis. As expected, the BMW X5 and Acura MDX return lower figures owing to their larger engines. What’s surprising is the Audi Q7, which falls flat in terms of efficiency, even with the smaller powertrain.
Verdict
2022 Volvo XC90 continues to be one of the most well-rounded and luxurious SUVs in the segment. While it may not be the most exciting to drive, the XC90 redeems itself with exemplary ride quality. The performance on offer is also impressive and the T8 Recharge model is deceptively quick. Overall, the Volvo XC90 offers a right mix of performance and comfort. The cherry on top is the pricing, undercutting most of its rivals.
