The 2022 Acura RDX is part of the third-generation RDX which received a major update in the year 2019. This year RDX receives minor updates in the form of more standard features, slight exterior redesign, a limited-run RDX PMC Edition model, new exterior colors, and more features on each package. While the 2022 RDX still draws power from the 272 hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission, with an available SH-AWD system.

2022 Acura RDX

The engine isn't the most efficient or quickest off the line but is rather made for a smooth and comfortable drive experience. Inside, the RDX has a generous cargo capacity and a roomy and premium cabin. Standing against the likes of BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and Audi Q5 all of which might just be a tad bit more luxurious, the Acura RDX undercuts all of them with a much lower starting price of $39,300.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Acura RDX is a compact SUV that sits under Acura MDX the flagship SUV of the Acura lineup. Being heavily based on the MDX in terms of exterior design, the RDX makes subtle changes this year to its exterior design to make it stand apart. With a generous amount of cabin and cargo space on offer and a cabin that tries to look luxurious, the Acura RDX will offer its buyer a luxury SUV experience at competitive pricing. Which starts under forty grand before destination and handling charges.

2022 Acura RDX Front Three-Quarter View

The RDX offers a turbo-four engine with FWD while AWD can be had by paying an extra $2,000 for better off-road grip and traction on wet surfaces. Unlike other SUVs in this class, the RDX isn't performance-oriented but it still is fun-to-drive and offers a relaxed and comfortable driving experience. With that being said, in this review, we will see if these attributes of the 2022 RDX help it keep the competition at bay or not.

Buying Advice

Well, since the trim line hasn't been announced for the 2022 RDX, we can't exactly suggest the trim to go for at this moment. However, once Acura does make an official announcement, expect this space to be updated as well by then.

Features

The 2022 Acura RDX has gained quite a few features this time. For 2022 the RDX is available in standard form along with four package options Technology, A-Spec, Advance, and A-Spec Advance. While above all is the limited-run PMC Edition trim priced at $55,295. The PMC Edition is based on the A-Spec Advance package and gets some exclusive interior and exterior treatment along with special exterior color options.

Coming to the prices the base variant starting at $39,300 with $1,045 destination and handling charges has already breached the forty grand price bracket. For the price, you get a 272 hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine and other standard features similar to last year. Except for the wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa smartphone integration which is available as standard from this year on.

There are four color choices for the interior with black and beige offered with all packages while Red, Grey, Peach, and Brown color interiors require you to upgrade to specific package or exterior colors to have it. Also, this year 19-inch alloy wheels have been given right from the Technology package while the A-Spec and higher package gets 20-inch wheels.

Engine and Performance

7.5/10

"The torque-vectoring SH-AWD system also helped the RDX change directions quickly and was backed by precise-feeling steering."-Caranddriver

The 2022 RDX comes with a single-engine option with a choice of either FWD drivetrain or Acura’s own Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive drivetrain. The engine on offer is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that cranks out 272-horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission. The RDX is quick to pick up the pace and feels brisk while driving around city traffic. The gearshifts are otherwise smooth and perform well mostly except it is slow to downshift. The turbocharged engine of the RDX has a raspy note which is sadly artificial noise played through RDX's audio system. Which is a bummer in an otherwise sporty looking SUV

2022 Acura RDX Engine Bay

The 2022 RDX took 6.6 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH and another 8.6 seconds to cover a quarter-mile. It offers a towing capacity of about 1,500 pounds which is less than most other competitors. The ride quality of the RDX is stiff even with the adaptive suspensions dampers and if had with the bigger 20-inch wheels then most of the bumps and undulations filters inside the cabin. On the positive side, the RDX is a good handling car and when had with the SH-AWD it tackles sharp turns and tricky road conditions with ease. Although being a crossover there is some amount of body roll although to unsettle the RDX you will need to push it hard around the corner.

Acura might use the same small 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine in the 2022 RDX as all the other rivals but it puts out the most amount of power and torque figures making it the most powerful in the segment. Although when it comes to acceleration timings surprisingly the Acura isn't on the top instead the Audi Q5 is the fastest to hit 60 MPH beating the RDX by a full one second.

Fuel Economy

6.0/10

"Turbo power yields decent fuel economy in the RDX." - The Car Connection

The 2022 Acura RDX powered by the turbo-four engine returns a respectable 22 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and 24 MPG under mixed driving conditions. While the 2022 RDX with SH-AWD sees a drop of 1 MPG across all three driving conditions. These figures aren't the best especially in the city and that is because Acura has tuned the engine for higher power and torque figures and turbocharged engines, in general, are very sensitive to the throttle input, drive with a heavy foot and you can take the figures further down.

In this comparison, the BMW X3 is a remarkable SUV, it strikes a perfect balance between performance and gas mileage. It is the second-fastest SUV but the most fuel-efficient among all. Next in line is the Audi Q5 followed by the Volvo XC60 and the Acura RDX. While the fuel tank capacity is the highest on the Volvo followed by the Audi both of which have 400 plus and 500 plus miles of range in the city and on the highway respectively.

Interior

7.5/10

"The RDX has a mix of friendly basic ergonomics and some rather different, if not polarizing, ideas for how things should be done." - Edmunds

Inside the 2022 Acura RDX, you will find that it has one of the most sporty interiors of any crossover. It has a touchpad controller to manage the functions of the infotainment system. The touchpad is placed just below the buttons for the electronic gear selector. The build quality of the cabin is sublime, but the rivals like BMW and Audi use better and more expensive materials inside the cabin. But then you also pay a lot for those, and for the price of the Acura, the cabin is still one of the best to be in.

2022 Acura RDX Dashboard

Cabin space is quite good in the RDX as both the front and rear passengers get enough legroom and headroom. It can seat four or five people easily making it ideal for intercity drives. The cargo bay of the RDX offers 29.5 cubic feet of space as standard. The rear seat is a 60/40 split-folding rear seat which further extended the cargo space to 58.9 cubic feet. Underfloor cargo storage is also present which makes it even more practical and increases the storage space further.

2022 Acura RDX Storage Space

As for the infotainment, the 2022 RDX offers a 10.2-inch touchscreen display which can also be controlled via a touchpad located below on the center console. As standard, you get wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, 9-speaker Acura premium sound system, etc. Adding the available package gets you in-built navigation, 12- or 16-speaker ELS studio premium sound system, wireless charging pad, 10.5-inch head-up display, etc.

The overall cabin space is the best in the 2022 RDX with better legroom in both rows. The XC60 also offers an almost similar cabin space as the RDX while the BMW X3 has the least spacious cabin to offer among all the SUVs here. The standard cargo space available in the XC60 is the best followed by the RDX, with RDX offering just 0.2 cubic feet lesser space than the XC60, which is negligible in the real world.

Exterior

7.0/10

"Muscular and handsome, the Acura RDX stands out among crossovers." - thecarconnection.com

The 2022 Acura RDX with the minor tweak upfront remains one of the most handsome crossovers out there today. It gets a slightly redesigned grille, wider air intakes, redesigned rear bumper for more aggressive looks, and lastly a new rectangular exhaust tip. Apart from these changes, the RDX has some distinctive design features which give it a distinct look making it easily recognizable.

2022 Acura RDX Front Three-Quarter View

The trapezoidal front grille and Jewel-Eye LED headlights make the front of the RDX stand apart. The big Acura logo sitting right in between the grille and flanked by sleek LED headlight units makes for a futuristic-looking crossover. Every RDX comes with features like a panoramic moonroof, LED tail lights, and a tailgate spoiler, which are given an, even more, sportier look with the optional A-spec package.

The RDX is the lightest which makes it sharper to drive but surprisingly doesn't help it get better fuel economy figures or offer better performance. When it comes to driving on unpaved or pothole-ridden roads, XC60 might be more capable than the rest thanks to the 8.5 inches of ground clearance. While the most surprising thing to note here is that the RDX is the longest SUV yet comes with the smallest wheelbase among all. While the rest of the SUVs aren't longer than the RDX yet offer longer wheelbase compared to it.

Safety

9.6/10

The 2022 Acura RDX gets a bevy of standard safety features and driver aids. The 2022 model has not been tested by either NHTSA or IIHS. However, the 2021 model has scored a full 5-star rating from NHTSA and IIHS gave the 2020 version the "Top Safety Pick+" title. These scores can be taken as the benchmark for the 2022 model as it belongs to the same generation without any significant mechanical or structural changes.

Competition

7.5/10

2022 Acura RDX vs 2021 BMW X3

The 2021 BMW X3 German is not only great to drive but also offers slightly better fuel efficiency and performance than the RDX. But the overall value of the RDX, the roomier cabin gives a tough fight to the X3.

2021 BMW X3

With a competent AWD system, the RDX also offers an equally satisfying driving experience. Thus for a price tag that is almost $4,000 less than the X3, 2022 RDX proves to be a better choice.

2022 Acura RDX vs 2021 Audi Q5

The 2021 Audi Q5 has everything on offer- a powerful engine, good interior space, and ample cargo space. The Acura RDX on the other hand not only has these attributes but also betters the Audi while offering more standard features, more safety, and driver assistance aids.

2021 Audi Q5

Also, the Acura has a better-predicted reliability rating than the Audi and in the long run, the former will be cheaper to run too. While the biggest flex of the Acura over the Audi is its lower price tag even if you have it with AWD.

2022 Acura RDX vs 2021 Volvo XC60

Just like the other two rivals, again the XC60 and RDX offer a lot, with the latest in infotainment tech, premium interior, and powerful engine.

2022 Volvo XC60

Volvo offers more in terms of safety features whereas the RDX offers better value for money and is more reliable than the Volvo.

Final Verdict

The 2022 RDX does not see many changes this year, but we are not complaining. The RDX is credited with providing a complete luxury SUV experience at competitive pricing. May it be driving dynamics or interior comfort and luxury, the RDX will not disappoint its customers. Although the lack of performance and lower gas mileage can deter some of the prospective buyers. While those who can overlook these two things for them the RDX is worth a look.
