The Toyota Tacoma Access Cab remains largely unchanged from the outgoing model. It is available for sale in four trims and starts at $26,500. Two engines are on offer- a 159-hp 2.7L inline-4 and a 278-hp 3.5L V6, the latter standard on TRD models. The Tacoma has dull acceleration but boasts one of the best off-road capabilities in the segment. Its maximum towing capacity is rated at 6,800 pounds.

2022 Toyota Tacoma three-quarter view

The cabin of the Tacoma is a mixture of hard plastics and good-quality materials but it benefits from an array of standard features. The infotainment system is intuitive and user-friendly while Toyota's Safety Sense P is standard on every Tacoma. Thus, it stands out from the crowd. The Tacoma will go up against the likes of the Chevrolet Colorado, the Nissan Frontier, and the Ford Ranger

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

You get a lot of well-built truck and a bed with many standard cargo-handling and safety features for your money- Edmunds

The Toyota Tacoma has always been synonymous with the mid-size truck segment and has been the recipient of numerous awards over the years. It is best known for its incredible off-road performance and capability. It also benefits from excellent durability and reliability. However, the Tacoma suffers from cramped rear-seat space and stiff ride quality.

The Tacoma buyers will enjoy low ownership costs than other competitors in the segment. The estimated cost per year, including maintenance, repair, fuel, etc. is nearly $6,250. The 2022 Tacoma can be leased starting at $275 per month for 36 months with $2,2925 due at signing. You could also finance it at an APR rate of 4.79% for up to 72 months.

Buying Advice

We recommend the TRD Sport trim as it offers dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging, push-button start, a sport-tuned suspension, and a 10-way power driver's seat. We also advise buying the Technology package as it adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors.

The Tacoma is also available with several utility and appearance packages. The Trail Edition package adds some unique styling traits to the exterior, all-terrain tires, and all-weather floor liners for $1,775 and is exclusive to the SR5 trim.  The Utility package adds black bumpers, door handles, mirror caps, a rear fixed window and removes rear speakers and seats.

Engine and Performance

5.0/10

As for the powertrains, the 4-cylinder engine is merely adequate- Autotrader

The Toyota Tacoma comes equipped with a 2.7L inline-4 which thumps out 159 hp and 180 lb-ft. of torque. This engine comes as standard fitment on the SR and SR5 trims. Optional for the aforementioned trims, and standard on the TRD trims is a 3.5L V6 pumping out 278 hp and 265 lb-ft. of pulling power. A 6-speed automatic gearbox is standard on both the engines whereas the V6 can also be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission only on TRD models.

2022 Toyota Tacoma engine

The handling of the Tacoma is composed as it is a bod-on-frame vehicle but many critics have pointed out its ride quality. Even on smooth pavement, it feels rough. All the things that make it a champ on the trail like a slow steering and a lazy throttle work against you in traffic. Therefore, U-turns require advance planning due to heavy and slow steering. The TRD Off-Road gets a tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks to help soak up even the biggest of bumps.

2022 Toyota Tacoma side driving view

On the road, the Tacoma is a lot slower than you would expect and it is evident with the 8.2-second 0-60 sprint time. With the extra power on tap, the V6 does the same in 7.7 seconds while the quarter-mile test is covered in 16 seconds. The transmission upshifts early and tends to hunt gears all the time, which is a bit annoying. In traffic, the brake pedal works like an on/off switch because Toyota is still using rear drum brakes on this vehicle. hence, the brakes take 132 feet to stop from 60 MPH.

Undoubtedly, the Ford Ranger is the quickest truck in this segment, all thanks to its quick-shifting gearbox. The Nissan Frontier's performance is better than the Tacoma but the latter's towing capability is slightly better. The Chevy Colorado is the least powerful here. It is also available with a V6 but you have to spend double the money to get it.

Fuel Economy

8.0/10

The V-6 Tacoma's EPA-rated fuel economy ranks in the middle of the pack- CarAndDriver

The fuel economy of the Toyota Tacoma is decent in the segment. The smaller inline-4 engine returns 20 MPG in the city, 23 MPG on a highway, and 21 MPG combined. Surprisingly, the V6 offers a similar fuel economy to the inline-4, which is really good. Opting for the 4WD system drops down the economy by just 1 MPG.

2022 Toyota Tacoma side angle view

When the V6 is paired with a manual transmission, the Tacoma offers the least fuel economy with a combined MPG of 18. The gas tank can carry 21.1 gallons of regular unleaded fuel. At its full capacity, you can expect a combined range of 443 miles from both engines. Overall, the Tacoma's fuel economy is commendable.

The Ford Ranger has the best fuel economy in the midsize truck segment. Considering the power outputs of the Chevy Colorado, its gas mileage is not that great. On the other hand, the Nissan Frontier's fuel economy is almost similar to the Tacoma, though it makes more power, which is really good. Overall, the Tacoma provides the best experience – both in terms of performance and in terms of frugality.

Interior

5.0/10

As is Toyota's tradition, assembly quality is excellent- Kelly Blue Book

The Toyota Tacoma may be tough on the outside but it's all about comfort and convenience on the inside. The clean dashboard layout helps to keep the driver in command while the spacious interior offers up room for up to 4. Talking of the material used, there are soft-touch areas all around the cabin. The overall theme of the interior is dark and utilitarian. Leather upholstery is standard only on the top-end model.

  2022 Toyota Tacoma dashboard

The front seats are comfortable but the seating position is low and the wide windshield instills confidence while driving down the road. Aside from the SR trim, all V6 models include a standard 10-way power driver's seat. In terms of space, the Tacoma offers less headroom throughout the cabin while the legroom at the back is restricted for adults. An available power moonroof lets everyone take in the open sky.

2022 Toyota Tacoma infotainment system

The touchscreen infotainment system in the Tacoma is offered in 7 and 8-inch sizes. Connectivities like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa are standard offerings. The user interface is simple to understand while the display quality is crisp and clear. The neatly laid out physical controls are within the driver's reach. For those who like to turn it up, a 6-speaker JBL premium stereo is available.

The exact appearance of the Tacoma depends on how you configure it- Carbuzz

The Toyota Tacoma has been in the market for quite a few years now. No matter how dirty the Tacoma gets while blazing the trail, the rugged good looks always shine through. All models boast an aggressive front-end and a muscular profile with an off-road stance as well as optional LED headlamps. The TRD Pro brings its own character with its heritage-inspired front grille, hood scoop, LED fog lamps and TRD Pro stamped into the bed.

2022 Toyota Tacoma three-quarter view

From the side, the Tacoma is more car-like and has a low roof. It is not as boxy as the other trucks in the segment. The wheel opinions include 16, 17, and 18-inch alloy wheels.  The higher ground clearance, the plastic cladding on the wheel arches, and the big rims make the Tacoma like it's ready to decimate the off-road. The Tacoma's looks can be further enhanced by available packages including Trail Edition and Nightshade Special Edition packages.

The Tacoma has the most standard driver-assistance technology in its class- CarAndDriver

Only NHTSA has rated the 2022 Toyota Tacoma and gave it four out of five stars. We are considering IIHS ratings of the outgoing model as there are no structural changes. The Tacoma received 'Good' ratings in all crash tests. It also received a 'Good' rating for the headlights and a 'Superior' rating for the front crash prevention.

2022 Toyota Tacoma NHTSA crash test

Toyota's Safety Sense P suite is standard on the Tacoma and hence, it is loaded with a lot of active safety features right off the bat with its SR trim. Few other features are bundled as options on lower trims and standard on top trim levels. Moreover, every Tacoma comes installed with a set of eight airbags. Some main safety features are:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Rearview camera
  • 360-degree camera
  • Automatic emergency braking w/ pedestrian detection
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot monitoring

2022 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab vs 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab

The Chevy Colorado's base engine is powerful but if you want a V6 in the Colorado, you have to spend nearly 38 grand which is not the case in the Tacoma. Also, it cannot beat the Tacoma when it comes to off-road capability. The Tacoma's interior quality and fuel efficiency are much better but the Colorado's cabin feels roomier. The Tacoma takes the lead in terms of safety and reliability as well.

2022 Chevy Colorado Extended Cab

2022 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab vs 2022 Nissan Frontier King Cab

The Nissan Frontier has been completely redesigned this year. It comes standard with a powerful V6 at a lesser price. The Frontier also offers an off-road-focused trim but it cannot outcast the Tacoma's off-road abilities. The redesigned interior of the Frontier feels modern and functional. It also offers more driver-assist features but the latter offers better trunk volume and hauling abilities.

2022 Nissan Frontier King Cab

2022 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab vs 2022 Ford Ranger SuperCab

The Ford Ranger’s turbocharged engine feels more potent than the Tacoma's engines. It also offers the best fuel economy in the segment and better towing capacity. The Ranger's cabin is simply more spacious and practical but not refined. The Tacoma offers better off-road gears and a long list of standard features. Therefore, pick the Ranger if you are concerned with performance and hauling duties.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is a pretty solid vehicle in the segment and still is the best-seller. It has enough room for the occupants to enjoy while the V6 on offer taps out an ample amount of output. In terms of comfort, it is a very utilitarian truck but still manages to offer a lot in terms of comfort and safety. While some would prefer the updated design language of the Frontier or workhorse capability of the Ranger, the Tacoma is still a competitive truck in its segment.
